Considering all this we must remember that the term realism was coined only centuries later; at the time the term wasn’t used for any sort of artistic expression. The term was introduced in 1855 by the French painter Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) who set up his own stand near the Worldfair. Over the entrance he had crafted a big sign saying "Pavillon du Réalisme". Barques de pèche sur la plage de Trouville, Courbet
