"Realism" is a confusing term -
a brief history

Nowadays there is a widespread and deep-rooted idea that realists are by definition painters that work in the tradition of "fine" painting. This is definitely not the case. A great number of artists employ a more or less loose technique, while staying true to visible reality. They are often called "figurative" painters, but they do fall within the frame of contemporary Realism.
