The Eighth Independent Realist Exhibition

What once started off by chance, is now - in the year 2005 - going into its 8th edition: the yearly Independent Realist Exhibition (IRE). Over the years the formula has not really changed, but the number of participants has. In the early days the exhibition started with a survey consisting of 30-odd renowned participants, but in the last few years this number has risen to about 60. This is also about the maximum the museum can accom-modate and also the maximum for the 192 pages of the accompanying catalogue. The Independent Realist Exhibition is also drawing attention abroad. During the 5th IRE in 2002 the manager of the German Panorama Museum found a lot of Dutch artists here that would later participate in his Mimesis-show, an exhibition of European Masters of the Still life. At the 6th IRE the managements of the two museums hit upon the idea to cooperate in organizing an exhibition of Dutch Masters. This eventually resulted in the exhibition "Naar het leven - Neuer Realismus in den Niederlanden". After the 8th IRE this project (with an extensive catalogue) will be on exhibition at Museum Møhlmann in Venhuizen. Thus, looking back on eight years of IRE, it is amazing to note that this wildly dug out pool has over the years transformed itself into a spacious pond with a firm springboard for contemporary Dutch realism and its students. There is again a lot to enjoy this year at the IRE, with its intriguing variety of styles and tech-niques; varying from fine to robust, from pencil to bronze and everything in between. As many as 61 renowned artists are displaying their skills and vision in about 300 works of fine quality. A cross section of contemporary Dutch realism. |
