The Fourth Independent Realists Exhibition
Director Wim Pybes thinks he is having a go at it in making his exhibition Realists after 1950 at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam. The painter Rob Møhlmann and his wife Laura disagree strongly. Back in 1998, at their Museum in the little village Venhuizen, they already organised their first big exposition for contemporary realism of a very high level. Even then the works of already 30 top-realists were shown and this rare combination of quality and quantity drew the attention of many art lovers throughout the whole country. But things went beyond that and after the First Independent Realists Exhibition each year a new survey followed.

Meanwhile this private initiative has become the yearly thermometer for realistic art in The Netherlands. 50 participants show their typical view on reality. But not only the views differ: so do the techniques. Some works seems to be accomplished by one-hared brushes; others by very rough ones. The presentation of these broad varieties is one of the aims of Museum Møhlmann. |

To these artists, reality as we can see it, is the basic assumption. Even in their fantasized pictures an apple is still an apple and a bicycle stays a bicycle. In that sense everything is real. In short it does represent something. Nevertheless abstraction does play an important role: how the colours interact; the rhythm of lines and fields, or the strong suggestion of brushstrokes. So artists in this field do stick out their necks, for the work doesn t allow any informalities. Reality is verifiable and the picture does immediately show imperfections or failures.
