There are a great many private collections that are a whole lot bigger than ours, the collection of Laura and me. Far more extensive than the one what we, on a shoestring, are trying to assemble for our private museum. Not to mention the collections of the real big museums. You cannot really blame the boys and girls of those instutitions for laughing their heads off, when they look at our poor bunch of framed and pedestalled works of art, only to ask, with tears in their eyes, if our "system" to classify the whole lot would fit on a piece of paper a small as A-5. |

But every collection consisting of at least two objects is, nevertheless, a collection. In what way other people look upon our collection is immaterial. When all is said and done, the collector collects only for himself. So do we, but still our approach is slightly different. Of course we only collect works of art that are contemporary, realistic (varying from very detailed to very coarse), works that appeal to us, but we also take into consideration what characterizes the artist in question. And we also take into account by what our times are characterized, to see what artists are doing, and to consider everybody's contribution to so-called contemporary Dutch Realism. It may be clear that the field of collecting is a great deal bigger than our purse. By far the biggest part of contemporary realistic art is out of our reach. There is, after all, no heritage, no rich uncle, no Maecenas, no subsidy or any other lucrative sources. It all simply has to be earned in the sweat of our brow. There is, in the true Calvinistical spirit, nothing wrong with this, but it means that our collection cannot be more than an attempt. An attempt to create museological space - however modest - for a form of art in which we believe, that we think is important, and maybe even typical, for something in our national character, because in this time of growing globalisation Dutch Realism seems to preserve its own particular character. The aim of many collections lies in fact in the "collecting" itself, in the pursuit of completeness. But the aim of our collection is simply to enjoy it. And also to give this opportunity to enjoy art to others than ourselves. If this should happen, our enjoyment is doubled. See, that's where the art comes in. |
