Red blush of shame and other notes in black and white

As a writer about art and its surroundings, Møhlmann is definitely an outsider. He is a keen observer, but he is so as an artist, never as an art historian. After having written many small articles about his colleagues, some autobiographic material, and a number of columns, he now turns up with everything that "has been lying waiting in his drawer", and this material simply defies description. The title of the book is 'Red blush of shame and other notes in black and white' and it consists of a number of colourful brainwaves, ideas, one-liners, short stories and poetical notes. As a grant finale there is a series of contemplations on the parallels between some specific newsphotos from the papers and their equivalents in the arts.

All texts, whether they're long or short, are in a sense "eye-openers", if only because they disclose a particular world view, as seen through the eyes of an artist. These texts make it all too clear that this artist prefers realism to the abstract, but at the same time they reveal his almost desperate wrestle with reality, which he eventually summarizes as being "absolute abstract". And whether or not you agree with his findings, before you know it you will be carried away by his inimitable way of arguing. And so the ostensibly bizarre similarity between the "Birth of a star" as photographed by the Hubble-telescope and "the Colossus" on a famous mezzotint by Francesco Goya suddenly becomes crystal clear.

The original title of the book is 'Schaamrood en andere optekeningen in zwart-wit' and, alas, it is only available in Dutch. But as soon as Møhlmann really becomes a world-famous painter, an English version will be published. And even a German. Or a French, a Spanish, a Greek, a Norwegian, Japanese, Chinese or even Tibetan.

Quest for Reality

Kraaijpoel: "His work is painted with a scalpel. We are reminded to The Flemish Primitivs and the Florentine Masters of the Quattrocento. The object is disentangled and reconstructed. This is not only watching, this is also wanting to know what the world is made of. Hence the effect of a piercing intensity. It is as if the objects are getting infused with a meaning other then they have by nature. It is in this, and not only in the stories behind the pictures, that "the magic" resides.

This book was published during the anniversary exhibition "Quest for Reality".

Again this new part includes a number of full-colour reproductions of works that came into being during the last year, besides a light-hearted account of everything that befell the painter that year. Yearbook 1998: Bidden boven het beeld

(Text backflap cover)

In the beginning of 1998 the book Scherpschilder aan de rand van de realiteit was published, an account by Rob Møhlmann about twenty years painting. It’s a beautiful and richly illustrated book, on account of the fact that twenty years of painting is, after all, a real milestone, especially in the precarious existence of an artist. Well, and then what? Another booklet at 40 years? At 50 perhaps? At one’s 80th birthday? Ten years after one’s death?

Rubbish, Møhlmann thought. Why not publish a booklet every year? And then reasonably priced, preferable with all new paintings in colour, making it possible for everyone interested to keep track of Møhlmann’s work. Moreover, in the course of time this would develop into a general overview of the complete oevre, without it being necessary for the painter to have been dead and buried for quite a few years.

Scherpschilder aan de rand van de realiteit

(Text backflap cover)

"In realistic painting everything has already been done" or "Still lives are boring and stuffy". These two much repeated remarks seem, remarkably enough, not to have any bearing on the very realistic paintings of Rob Møhlmann. As no other contemporary painter he seems to have regenerated the concepts of "realism" and "still live" - concepts that had apparently already bled to death. His work is characterized by an unequalled technique, often utterly unpretentious subjects, a consistently applied method that relies on a scale of 1 : 1, and very startling points-of-view. A good example is not only the well-known Canto-project (1982-1993), a series of 124 paintings; also his most recent work, perceived perpendicularly from above, forces the observer to experience reality afresh.

Ik ben een eilander

(Text backflap cover)

The booklet Ik ben een eilander was written by Rob Møhlmann on the occasion of the Month of Art, held on the island Ameland in 1998. It’s an account - fluently written, humourous and full of self-mockery - of the sometimes hilarious struggle of the artist with society and with the Muses, in his attempt, as an "islander", to keep his head above water.

Centre of the story is his studio, as an island of Muses, where the artist doesn’t have a lot to say. He keeps plodding away, because unnoticed by him, the Muses keep making ever sterner demands, and when the artist finally can’t keep up, they simply sink his island by pulling the plug on it. Thus the old legendary story of Atlantis keeps being repeated, to this very day.

Wentelwiek

Wentelwiek is a poem of creation, for which the brush was dipped in words. The poem relates in 144 stanzas the story of Creation and Origin - and similar matters that we usually write with a capital. But now, and probably for the firrst time, without the presence of Gods, Half-gods, Heroes, Angels, Dragons or Demons.

The booklet was published independently, in an edition of only 200 copies, which were all numbered and signed. To be reviewed it was sent to about 20 papers and magazines, together with a self-addressed and stamped envelope, with the request to send it back if the paper wasn’t interested in it. None of the papers or magazines responded, and not a single copy was sent back.

Het Cantoproject. Een blik op de werkelijkheid.
(The Canto-project. A glance at reality)

(Text backflap cover)

In the history of art there are a few painters for who the obsession with a particular subject led to choosing a theme to be elaborated in detail. Rob Møhlmann takes his fascination for his subject - the relation between perception and reality - a step further: in his logical consequence he takes this to the most outer limits. A simple can of the imaginary brand "Canto" inspired him to paint a dazzling series of no less than 124 still lifes. Amongst other things we see the can make a bizarre journey through his studio, during which the can time and again shows up amongst other objects. Thus the can unrelentingly dictates the (out)look of the observer. Every painting in this series (that took Møhlmann eleven years to paint) is interesting to study individually, whilst the series as a whole prompts reflection, amazement and admiration. His quest for the artistic representation of reality bears an unambiguous title: The Canto-project - A glance at reality.

Drs. Johanna Jacobs, curator of Museum "Het Markiezenhof" has written a preface to the realism of Rob Møhlmann, whilst the artist himself, in an engaged and self-deprecating manner, elaborates on his artistic adventure with reality.

More information on the Canto-project can be found here.
