On June 2nd 1988 a big gamble was taken when we purchased a 19th-century house in the historical centre of Hoorn. The house, at 44 Nieuwe Noord, turned out to be delapidated, and dated from the 16th century instead of the 19th century. There followed a year of reconstruction, and no painting was done. A carpenters-workshop was turned into a studio.

The carpenters-workshop used to be a shop, with two large windows facing west. The sunlight turned out to be a great nuisance. Necessity was partly turned into virtue by screening off the windows and using the shopwindows to display works for sale.
